Roma, 29 novembre 2021.

Rome, November 29, 2021. Is it possible to produce an artwork that combines the highest level of craftsmanship and video art? Can a book be created using digital technology and the oldest binding techniques? This was achieved by the D’ORO Collection publishing house which will present the first the first edition of  D’ORO D’ART project at Art Basel Miami (29 November – 4 December 2021).

Conceived by the founder and CEO of D’ORO Collection Salvatore Giorgio Dino, D’ORO D’ART stems from the desire of creating a book capable of communicating beyond geographical borders and language barriers. By combining the precious material of books and the immateriality of the digital, the project aims to develop new forms of expression where art and craftsmanship are put together.

“I knew art could be the universal key to this challenge. – Explains Salvatore Giorgio Dino – And making the first handmade book in history that features digital art inside was the revolution that only D’ORO could imagine”

The starting point of the project was in Rome where the Casa D’ORO Collection headquarter is located, and thereafter it broadened its horizon with the involvement of international artists, curators and experts.

For the first D’ORO D’ART book the curators Barbara London – founder of the MoMA Video Art Department – and Valentino Catricalà – professor at Manchester Metropolitan University – chose Dara Birnbaum (New York City, 1946) American artist, pioneer of VideoArt, showing the project’s particular direction: through those who have shaped the history of an expressive medium is still able to say a lot about contemporaneity.

Dara Birnbaum has re-edited her Arabesque Special Limited Edition (2021) in a vertical version, exclusively for D’ORO by transforming it from a four-channel installation into a single-channel video that integrates sounds and images. The video sublimely conveys the love between Robert and Clara Schumann. Infact, Birnbaum combined footage from several performances of Arabesque Opus 18  by Robert Schumann and Romanze 1 Opus 11 by Clara Schumann, with still images from the 1947 movie Song of Love about the Schumanns, the artist offers us a delicate reflection on their troubled love relationship closely linked to music, as they are both musicians.

“For me, turning to a new page in a book is always tremendously exciting- says Dara Birbaum – thereby, creating this special edition of “Arabesque” for D’ORO provides a similar experience. However, now there is “magic” – a digitally-alive dynamic new page of sound and visuals, which are certain to enrapt the reader. “

The elegance of Birnbaum ’s video fits perfectly with the sophisticated structure of the D’ORO Collection book project, creating a unique work of art: an installation that is activated by opening like a tryptich the gilded and lacquered cover, which in this instance is serigraphed and decorated with images from the artist The shiny and iridescent silk interior can be found in the book lining as well as in the background for the video. Arabesque Special Limited Edition (2021) – limited-edition artwork of only 6 pieces – is presented during Art Basel Miami at Marian Goodman gallery’s booth. The partnership between D’ORO Collection and Marian Goodman, New York will last over time as the gallery will be involved in choosing the next artists who will create the next editions of D’ORO D’ART.
