L'incontro dedicato al collezionista svizzero Uli Sigg è il terzo appuntamento del Public Program ideato da FM Centro per l'Arte Contemporanea, in occasione della mostra The Szechwan Tale. China, Theatre and History.

Dopo il focus sull'evoluzione dell'arte contemporanea cinese dal punto di vista della storia e della pratica dell'arte (con Lü Peng, storico dell'arte e direttore artistico della Biennale di Anren, e l'artista Liu Ding) e l'approfondimento sulle istituzioni e sul mercato dell'arte contemporanea in Cina dal punto di vista della ricerca accademica e degli operatori italiani delle gallerie e delle case d'asta attivi in Cina (con Marilena Vecco, Burgundy School of Business, Dijon; Flavio del Monte, galleria Massimo de Carlo, Milano/Londra/Hong Kong e Beatrice Botta, Sotheby’s, Milano), FM è lieto di ospitare Uli Sigg, per analizzare il fenomeno del collezionismo di arte contemporanea cinese e le sue relazioni con il sistema delle istituzioni museali in Cina.

Uli Sigg, imprenditore attivo in Cina sin dagli anni Settanta, è stato ambasciatore della Svizzera a Beijing dal 1995 al 1998 ed è attualmente riconosciuto come il massimo collezionista di arte contemporanea cinese.

Avviata negli anni Novanta attraverso relazioni dirette con gli artisti, la Sigg Collection si configura come una raccolta di qualità museale e di impianto enciclopedico, articolata sin dall'origine in modo sistematico per la dichiarata intenzione di Uli Sigg di destinarla ad un museo cinese di arte contemporanea.

“Ho cominciato a collezionare come se fossi un’istituzione, dimenticando il mio personale gusto e sapendo che un giorno avrei restituito la mia collezione al suo paese”, ha affermato Uli Sigg.

Presentata in diverse mostre internazionali, ad oggi la collezione, che comprende circa 2.300 opere di oltre 350 artisti cinesi, costituisce una testimonianza fondamentale dello sviluppo dell'arte in Cina dagli anni '70 agli inizi del XXI secolo. Il progetto originario di Uli Sigg ha trovato la propria realizzazione nel 2012, quando un'ampia selezione di circa 1500 opere è stata donata all'M+, il nascente museo di arte contemporanea di Hong Kong, situato nel cultural district di West Kowloon e progettato da Herzog & de Meuron, che sarà inaugurato nel 2019.

The Szechwan Tale. China, Theatre and History

Fino al 15 luglio 2018 FM Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea presenta The Szechwan Tale. China, Theater and History, a cura di Marco Scotini, che si rivolge al contesto cinese, proseguendo la linea d’indagine tracciata con le mostre Non-Aligned Modernity, dedicata all’arte dell’Est Europa, e Il Cacciatore Bianco/The White Hunter, sull’arte africana.

La mostra, evoluzione del progetto realizzato dal curatore ad Anren, nella Provincia del Sichuan in Cina, all'interno della prima Biennale di Anren (ottobre 2017 – febbraio 2018), ripercorre la storia delle relazioni tra Oriente e Occidente attraverso i grandi temi del Teatro e della Storia, trattando questi argomenti all’interno di un percorso espositivo unico, concepito come un meta-teatro in cui più di trenta di artisti internazionali e cinesi forniscono una decostruzione degli strumenti della macchina teatrale – il pubblico, il sipario, l’attore (l’automa, il puppet, il teatro delle ombre), i costumi e la scenografia (ambiente mutabile e immutabile), il testo e la musica – come metafora di altrettanti fenomeni sociali e del loro carattere storico.

The event dedicated to the Swiss collector Uli Sigg is the third appointment of the Public Program ideated by FM Centre for Contemporary Art, on the occasion of the exhibition The Szechwan Tale. China, Theatre and History. After focusing on the evolution of Chinese contemporary art from an art historical point of view (with Lü Peng, art historian and artistic director of the Anren Biennal, and with the artist Liu Ding) and after analyzing institutions and the market for contemporary art in China from the perspective of academic research and Italian art market professionals active in the region (with Marilena Vecco, Burgundy School of Business, Dijon; Flavio del Monte, galleria Massimo De Carlo, Milano/Londra/Hong Kong and Beatrice Botta, Sotheby’s, Milano), FM is honored to host Swiss collector Uli Sigg to look closely into the phenomenon of collecting contemporary Chinese art and into its relationship with Chinese art institutions and museums.

Uli Sigg, entrepreneur active in China since the 70s, served from 1995 to 1995 as Swiss ambassador in Beijing and is currently known as the leading collector of contemporary Chinese art. The Sigg Collection, started in the 90s through a direct relationship with the artists, is renown for its museum quality and its encyclopedic structure. From the beginning it has been articulated in a systematic way as Uli Sigg envisioned it as intended to a Chinese museum of contemporary art.

“I started my collection as if I were an institution, forgetting about my personal taste and knowing that one day I would have given it back to its own country”, said Uli Sigg. Presented in different international exhibitions, today the collection includes 2.300 artworks by more than 350 Chinese artists, and constitutes a fundamental evidence of the development of Chinese art from the 70s to the beginning of the XXI century. Uli Sigg’s original project was fulfilled in 2012, when a large selection of 1.500 artworks was donated to M+, the nascent museum of contemporary art in Hong Kong, situated in the cultural district of West Kowloon and designed by Herzog & de Meuron, which will be opened in 2019.

The Szechwan Tale. China, Theatre and History

Until July 15, 2018, FM Centre for Contemporary Art present The Szechwan Tale. China, Theatre and History, a new large-scale exhibition curated by Marco Scotini and focused on the Chinese context, following the line of research set with the latest exhibitions Non-Aligned Modernity, focused on Eastern European Art, and The White Hunter, on African Art.

The exhibition is an evolution of the project realized in Anren, Sichuan (China), at the first Anren Biennale (October 2017 – February 2018), and it traces the relationship between East and West around the grand themes of Theater and History, covering these subjects within a sort of meta-theatre in which more than thirty international and Chinese artists provide a deconstruction of the tools of the theatric machine – such as the audience, the curtain, the actors (the automaton, the puppet, the shadow theater), the costumes and the backdrops (a changing and unchanging environment), the text and the music – as metaphors of an equal number of social phenomena and of their historic naturel.
