A Tarantella Rhythm and Steps Workshop

Conducted by Alessandra Belloni

Rhythm is the cure: A Tarentella workshop conducted by Alessandra Belloni, the Artistic Director, Founder and Lead Performer of “I Giullari di Piazza”, an Italian Music, Theatre and Dance Ensemble and Artists-in-Residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. She is the only woman in the U.S. and in Italy who specializes in traditional Southern Italian folk dances and percussion combined with singing that she learned in Southern Italy.

THE EL

Book Reading by Catherine Gigante-Brown

Author Catherine Gigante-Brown will read excerpts from her novel, The El in addition to signing copies of the book. Set in 1936 Brooklyn, in the shadow of the elevated train (“the El” for short), the compelling tale chronicles two seasons in the lives of an ebullient Italian-American clan with a terrible secret. Gigante-Brown draws upon her rich family history and her love of the borough to craft this tense, timeless saga.

THE ITALIAN AMERICANS

Film Screening

Special 35 minute preview of the new 4 hour documentary film, The Italian Americans which premieres February 17, 2015 on PBS stations nationwide. The Italian Americans, narrated by Stanley Tucci, explores the evolution of Italian Americans from the late 19th Century to today, from “outsiders” once viewed with suspicion and mistrust, to some of the most prominent leaders of business, politics and the arts today. Award winning writer/producer John Maggio (Billy The Kid, Boy in the Bubble) presents presents a portrait of Italian American life that includes interviews with Tony Bennet, John Turturro, Gay Talese, Representative Nancy Pelosi and Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, among others. The Italian Americans peels away myths and stereotypes to reveal a world uniquely Italian and uniquely American.

Lecture and DVD Presentation by Anita Sanseverino

Anita’s vibrant and beautifully photographed essay of Venetian masks presents viewers with a visual perspective of the famed revelry and rituals of the Carnevale. With the breathtaking city of Venice as her backdrop, her well-timed camera records many faces of mystery. Lone figures that haunt, romantic couples that shout their closeness with coordinated ensembles, individuals who surrender to a united theme—all are among the thousands of free-spirited actors playing out their fantasy roles on the Carnevale stage.
