Art exhibits brighten summer days

The National Museum of Contemporary Art of Korea, Leeum Samsung Museum of Art, Hangaram Art Museum and Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art are all holding exciting exhibitions over the summer vacation period for people to enjoy with their friends and families.

An exhibition entitled “The American Art; Masterpieces of Everyday Life from the Whitney Museum of American Art” is being held in National Museum of Art’s Deoksugung Annex until September 25. The Whitney Museum of American Art is one of New York's most prestigious museums, and this is the first exhibit of the Whitney Museum’s collection in Asia.

The exhibition, organized around the theme of “object”, includes a total of 87 art works for people to enjoy. Among those works are pieces by 47 influential contemporary artists, including Man Ray, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, Dan Flavin, and Jeff Koons. The exhibition consists of three different sections: “American Icons and Everyday Life,” “Object and Identity” and “Object and Perception.”

Under the theme of “Art & Play 2011,” the Seoul Arts Center’s Hangaram Art Museum will hold an exhibition called “Kinetic Art” until August 24 for visitors to experience and learn about art and science. Kinetic art contains moving parts and depends on motion to give it full effect, allowing it to seamlessly blend art and science. The moving parts are generally powered by wind, motors or the observer, and encompass a wide variety of overlapping techniques and styles.

The Seoul Olympic Museum of Art is holding an exhibition entitled “Joseph Beuys: The Multiples” until August 28. Joseph Beuys was a German performance artist, sculptor, installation artist, graphic artist and art theorist who collaborated with Nam June Paik. The exhibition features 200 pieces of artwork, including drawings, sculptures and photography.

Marking the 10th anniversary of the Marcel Duchamp Prize, the National Museum of Contemporary Art is exhibiting works by more than 20 Duchamp Prize-winning artists, along with Duchamp. The title of the exhibition is “French Art Today: Marcel Duchamp Prize”. The exhibition is supported by Association for the International Diffusion of French Art (ADIAF) and various international museums to promote French art worldwide. Sixteen nominees and winners of Marcel Duchamp Prize will participate in the exhibition, which features everything from drawings to sculptures to showcase French contemporary art.

The participating artists include Mathieu Mercier, Cyprien Gaillard, Philippe Ramette, Camille Henrot, Camille Henrot, Pierre Ardouvin, Claude Leveque, Kader Attia, Celeste Boursier-Mougenot, Saadane Afif and Michel Blazy. The art on exhibit includes Mercier’s examinations of the relationship between mass-produced objects and art, Ramette’s thought-provoking photos, Henrot’s videos and animation, and Boursier-Mougenot’s musical and instillation works to illustrate French artistic philosophy in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Seongnam Arts Center is holding an exhibition from the Royal Academy of Art in London, an independent, privately funded institution led by eminent artists and architects whose purpose is to promote the creation, enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts through exhibitions, education and debate. The exhibit features 50 artworks by 13 artists from various fields such as drawings, sculptures and architecture.

The Leeum Samsung Museum of Art is holding an exhibition called “Korean Rhapsody, a Montage of History and Memory” until August 21. The exhibition consists of two sections, “Symbols of Modernity” and “Unfamiliar Hopes.” The main goal of this exhibition is to reflect on modern Korean life and reconsider the future through Korea’s turbulent modern history.
