I recently (November 22) shared the history and recipe of the classic Neapolitan Ragu’ alla Genovese. Today, I am listing my all-time favorite restaurants in Naples; once you resume your travels, you can taste some great food in the gulf city.

1.  Pizzeria Mattozzi Restaurant

Located in the Chiaia district, it has been a reference point for over 30 years for lovers of typical Neapolitan cuisine. The family operation led by Luigi Mattozzi and his sons offers exquisite pizzas and a vast selection of typical Neapolitan specialties. Among them, I like to mention the unmissable pasta alla Genovese, the pasta with beans, and the Parmigiana. They also stuff the thick pizza cornicione (border) with fresh local ricotta. All the dishes are sublimely cooked. Great place.

2.  Osteria della Mattonella

A destination for tourists and Neapolitans, the Mattonella is an old family-run trattoria, founded in 1978 and located between the Spanish Quarters and Monte di Dio. Although the name derives from ancient hand-painted tiles from the late 18th century, the majolicas still crowd the tavern’s rooms today. Consequently, the menu offers only the best dishes of the Neapolitan tradition. Among the best, in my opinion, there are the mouth-watering Genoese and several others findings.

3.  Osteria da Carmela

In 1967 near Naples’s historic center and under one of the most famous theaters, Don Vincenzo opened a family-run business focusing on hospitality and well-being. Carmela, his wife, a loving woman, and a great cook, acted as the inspiring muse of the project. From his love for the most authentic Neapolitan tradition and the ancient recipes learned from his mother, delicacies were born that quickly became a myth, so much so that, only two years after its inauguration, the tavern expanded its premises, continuing an unstoppable march. Today, Rosario runs the restaurant, the youngest of four children, who carry on the business passionately. There are many exquisite dishes of the Neapolitan culinary tradition that you can taste here. Among the best, there are the Genoese and the seafood risotto, equally excellent!

4.  Antica Latteria

Old Dairy Located in the alleys of the Chiaia district, the Antica Latteria has been one of the most characteristic meeting points in the city since the 1950s / 1960s, where you can meet up with a bean and escarole soup and an onion omelet. Frequented by many young people who also stop here for an aperitif, the Antica Latteria offers many dishes of Neapolitan cuisine prepared with quality materials and following traditional recipes. Choose the delicious Genoese, eggplant Parmigiana, and the meatballs (fried or meat sauce). In addition, some original dishes are halfway between tradition and modernity, all available for your discovery.

5.  At the Leon D’Oro

Halfway between trattoria and restaurant, D’Oro is another historical place famous for dishes cooked according to the classic Neapolitan tradition. The restaurant has two rooms, one larger at the entrance and more intimate near the wood-burning oven. Photographs of famous theatrical actors adorn the inside walls. Regulars flock in due to the venue’s proximity to the theaters (one of which is the Bellini). At the same time, the 1950s floor gives a vintage touch to the environment. Among the main dishes of D’Oro are the Genoese and the eggplant parmigiana, cooked according to the classic Neapolitan tradition. Also excellent are the gnocchi alla sorrentina, the pasta and beans, and the pasta and potatoes.
