Every year, Greenpeace Brazil flies over the Amazon to monitor deforestation build up and forest fires. From July 29th to 31st, 2021, flights were made over points with Deter (Real Time Deforestation Detection System) and Prodes (Brazilian Amazon Satellite Monitoring Project) warnings, besides heat spots notified by Inpe (National Institute for Space Research), in the states of Amazonas, Rondônia, Mato Grosso and Pará.

Roma, 03.09.20 – Oltre seimila partecipanti appartenenti a 176 diversi Popoli Indigeni del Brasile sono riuniti dalla scorsa settimana a Brasilia, capitale dello Stato sudamericano, per lo “StruggleForLife Camp”. Attendono il giudizio della Corte suprema federale brasiliana sul futuro delle terre indigene protette, e in particolare su una norma chiamata “Marco Temporal”. Questa norma permetterebbe alle lobby dell’agribusiness e delle attività estrattive di intensificare l’accaparramento delle terre, sottraendole alla foresta e a chi la abita e difende da generazioni, cioè i Popoli Indigeni.

«Se il “Marco Temporal” sarà giudicato incostituzionale, i Popoli Indigeni avranno finalmente la possibilità di difendere i loro territori e rivendicare legalmente l’assegnazione delle loro terre ancestrali. In caso contrario, aumenterebbero i conflitti legati alle invasioni e allo sfruttamento delle terre abitate dai Popoli Indigeni.

Non possiamo permettere che ciò accada», dichiara Martina Borghi, campagna foreste di Greenpeace Italia.

Il 24 agosto, migliaia di indigeni hanno marciato davanti al Congresso brasiliano per demarcare simbolicamente Brasilia con 1.296 cartelli, uno per ogni territorio indigeno rivendicato dai popoli originari del Brasile. Due giorni dopo hanno sfilato con una bara di dieci metri per simboleggiare il triste destino al quale stanno andando incontro.

E mentre in Brasile i Popoli Indigeni si mobilitano, a due giorni dalla Giornata mondiale d’azione per l’Amazzonia, volontarie e volontari di Greenpeace sono scesi in piazza in numerose città italiane ed europee per sensibilizzare le persone sul legame tra deforestazione, clima e violazione dei diritti umani. I numerosi incendi che devastano l’Amazzonia e le foreste del Sudamerica sono infatti strettamente legati ai consumi europei, e in particolare alla produzione di carne e mangimi, perché sono appiccati soprattutto per fare spazio ai campi di soia destinata alla mangimistica e ai pascoli dei bovini.

«È urgente che il Brasile riconosca i diritti e la proprietà delle terre ai Popoli Indigeni e che l’Unione europea approvi una rigorosa normativa per impedire l’ingresso sul mercato comunitario di prodotti e materie prime legati alla deforestazione e alle violazioni dei diritti umani», afferma Borghi.

Le foreste hanno anche un ruolo importante nella regolazione del clima. Secondo un recente studio internazionale condotto dal Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche di Torino (Cnr-Isac) e pubblicato sulla rivista Global Change Biology, la deforestazione in Amazzonia potrebbe portare a una riduzione annuale delle precipitazioni del 55-70 per cento. Questo avrebbe ripercussioni globali: anche in Italia gli incendi di questa estate sono stati particolarmente drammatici e, secondo un dossier di Europa verde, dall’inizio dell’anno nel nostro Paese sono bruciati 158 mila ettari di territorio.

Indigenous People and activists use 1,296 signs to symbolically demarcate Brasília as an Indigenous Land, in a protest against the government’s refusal on demarcating Indigenous Lands. The signs were placed in front of the National Congress, and carried the names of all Indigenous Lands in the country, including the 530 that haven’t even begun being demarcated.

Indígenas e ativistas utilizam 1.296 placas para demarcar simbolicamente Brasília como Terra Indígena, em protesto contra a recusa do governo em demarcar TIs e pelo reconhecimento e identificação de seus territórios. As placas, dispostas em frente ao Congresso Nacional, trazem os nomes de todas as TIs no país, inclusive as 530 que ainda não possuem seu processo demarcatório aberto.

The manifestation sheds light on the government’s negligence in facing the pandemic and failing to demarcate Indigenous Lands, which leads to the ongoing slaughter of Indigenous leaderships. Indigenous blood keeps being spilled – and the government’s hands are filled with it.
