Saturday, July 18th, on the 410th anniversary of the death of Michelangelo Merisi, universally known as Caravaggio, we bring back up Jordan River’s documentary “Caravaggio, the Power of Light” which tackles these themes in an innovative way. The documentary – which will be available in Italy on CHILI and UAMTV, and on Amazon Prime Video internationally – investigates Caravaggio’s persona, starting from the undertakings of his formidable paintings off the beaten track. Introspection is a specialty of the house here (River’s newest, sharper 4K feature “Artemisia Gentileschi – Warrior Painter” about the great 17th Century artist considered by many a female Caravaggio and a feminist icon, will come out next fall in over 10 countries). The director’s analysis doesn’t stop at the use of chiaroscuro, but goes wider and deeper, exploring the most obscure corners of the artist’s soul. We will learn how Caravaggio’s works can freeze an instant in time, when light reveals the painter’s intimate thoughts on the impermanent nature of the material world, while raising the spirit to the sublime pinnacles that only art can reach.
