Columbus Circle Annual Wreath Laying When: Sunday, October 7, 10:00-10:30am Where: Columbus Circle Monument Even before the Columbus Day Parade became a New York City institution in 1929, Columbus Circle was the site of an annual wreath laying that commemorated Christopher Columbus’s historic voyage and the immigrants who followed his path over the centuries. Members of the Italian Benevolent Society and the Knights of Columbus marched to the monument in a brief pilgrimage that recalled the event that changed the course of world history. Today, the wreath laying is held under the auspices of the National Council of Columbian Associations in Civil Service in conjunction with the Columbus Citizens Foundation. The wreath laying features brief remarks by representatives of the Italian and Italian-American communities of New York and a short band performance. Columbus Day Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral When: Monday, October 8, 9:30am Where: 5th Ave. between 50th/51st Streets The Annual Columbus Day Mass is held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The Mass reflects on the millions of men, women, and children who came to America in pursuit of freedom and opportunity, and the faith that helped them endure hardship and adversity. The Mass is celebrated at 9:30am on Monday, Columbus Day. Tickets are required to enter the Cathedral up until 9:15am, at which point it becomes general admission. Columbus Day Parade When: Monday, October 8, 11:30am – 4:00pm Where: 5th Avenue, 44th to 72nd Street The annual New York City Columbus Day Parade is the world’s largest celebration of Italian American culture. The parade will be led by Grand Marshall Guy Chiarello, President of First Data Corporation. |

The New Jersey State Arts Council, a partner agency of the National Endowment of the Arts administered through the Essex County Dept. of Cultural Affairs. These special funds will enable them to research, rehearse, and present new material in a concert, “Postcards from Italy” to be offered at Caldwell University on Sunday, November 4, at 3:00pm in the Alumni Theatre.
