PINOCCHIO IN MANHATTAN

Theater Workshop

Written by Paolo Tratamella
Directed by Vittorio Capotorto
Presented by ItalyTheater

You are cordially invited to attend a fun and interactive theater workshop for children ages 6-11 at the Italian American Museum on Saturday, April 26 at 4:00PM. The children in attendance will get to create and perform with professional actors, write their thoughts on Pinocchio and the eternal dilemma of truth vs. lies, and have the chance to win one trip* to Collodi, Italy, where the original Pinocchio was created. The children will discover what theater is about and how to overcome their fears and find truth through lots of adventures.

About the play:
Angelina is a ten year-old girl living in a family-oriented, middle class Manhattan neighborhood. She has two brothers and will be attending middle school in the Lower East Side. Because of the financial conditions of the household, she bakes and has bake-street sales every two weekends to earn money for her toys and extra clothes. Angelina thinks she doesn't have friends because she owns few toys and no gadgets to play with other kids.

Heather is a girl-spirit looking for a human girl to befriend. She tried many times but unsuccessfully, as she thinks she needs to hide the fact that she is a spirit. Pinocchio advises her to get acquainted with Angelina, a girl living in Manhattan. Heather is skeptical: she tried so often around the world, why would it work in New York City.

Heather and Angelina meet for the first time. Heather pretends to belong to an upscale family who just moved down the block and she refuses to help Angelina with her upcoming bake sale. Heather asks Angelina to play instead in the playground late that evening, but Angelina doesn't want to go because she is afraid of the dark. The two girls fail to connect.

Pinocchio appears and encourages Heather to reveal to Angelina the truth about herself. Before leaving, Heather implores Angelina to be friends with her. Pinocchio explains to Angelina that Heather needs someone to play with at night to break the spell, otherwise she won’t be able to experience the daylight. In addition, Angelina is the very first person to know who Heather is and Heather has to show that truth is the only way to friendship.

The performance will feature two professional actors.

* One trip awarded in 2014 (1 child + 2 adults). Winner announced May 27, 2014 at Press Briefing for upcoming play, Born Liars.
