Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival begins

The 15th Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival (SICAF) is being held from July 20 to 24 at Coex, CGV Myeongdong, and Seoul Ani-Cinema. The festival consists of exhibitions, an international animation film festival, international digital cartoon competition and animation market.

The opening film “Children who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below

Most of the exhibitions are being held at Coex’s Hall D in southern Seoul. With the theme “Learning the World through Cartoons,” the events include book signings by famous Korean cartoonists, educational programs and special exhibitions of works by Korean cartoonists like Shin Mun-su. “One Source Multi-Use,” a program that features Korean cartoons from a wide variety of media, including film, television and musicals. Visitors also can meet Japanese writer Yaro Abe and origami master Yamaguchi Makoto.

The venues for the film festival are CGV Myeongdong and Seoul Ani-Cinema. The opening film is “Children who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below,” directed by Shinkai Makoto. More than 1,000 films from 52 countries were submitted for the official competition and a total of 160 films, including five feature films and 39 shorts, were selected.

One of the main events is the International Digital Cartoon Competition. The submissions include mobile cartoons, digital illustrations and web-cartoons, and will compete for up to 10 million won in prize money.

Various special events, including the SICAF Wonder Cosplay Festival and a parade of cartoon characters, will also be held during the festival.
