Korean dance impresses The Hague

On May 30, “Soul, Sunflower” a performance by the National Dance Company of Korea that blends Korean traditional dance movements with modern dance, was presented at the Lucent Dans Theater in The Hague, Netherlands, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Korean-Dutch diplomatic relations.

Among nearly 900 people who attended the event were Wim Kok, former Prime Minister of the Netherlands; Ben Bot, former Foreign Affairs Minister; and Karel Hartogh, the director for Asia and Oceania at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with other senior officials.

Prior to the performance, Director of the Korean Culture and Information Service Seo Kang-soo and former Prime Minister Kok each gave a congratulatory speech. Both mentioned that the performance demonstrates the two nations’ work on in enhancing bilateral ties and bolstering cultural exchanges.

The performance received favorable notices and the audience praised their subtle and moving dancing to a number of different musical genres, from traditional Korean music to modern improvisational jazz. Kok called it a “wonderful performance,” while Director Hartogh said it was a “great surprise.”
