Bravo! ASEAN in Korea 2010: an evening of ethnic music and dance

“Bravo! ASEAN in Korea 2010,” a music and dance contest, was held on November 20 at the New Millennium Hall of Konkuk University in Seoul. The contest was open to citizens of the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) member states living in Korea, and was conducted under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

This is the second year the ASEAN-Korea Centre has staged the “Bravo! ASEAN” contest. The annual event aims to promote fellowship, cooperation and cultural exchanges between the people of ASEAN member states and Korea.

Twelve out of 47 teams qualified to advance from the preliminary round and participated in the competition. They sang popular Korean songs, as well as performing their own traditional music and dances. The winning team, whose 14 members all hailed from Indonesia, received a trophy, certificate and prize money. In addition, one member was given a round-trip flight ticket home.

Korean pop music fans were particularly delighted by a special performance by ZE:A, the popular 9-member boy band also known as Children of Empire, after the contest. Sinawi, an instrumental fusion ensemble rooted in Korean traditional music, opened the show with an improvisational performance.
The contest allowed participants to demonstrate their talent not only in Korea, but also globally through Arirang TV network broadcasts.
