European masterworks coming to Korea

Exhibits of paintings by European masters are on their way to warm the hearts of Korean art lovers and make the winter cold easier to bear.

Korea's two leading museums, the National Museum of Contemporary Art and the Seoul Museum of Art, will hold exhibitions of works by Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall, along with works from other important artists from the same period.

* Picasso and Modern Art

The National Museum of Contemporary Art in Deoksu Palace in central Seoul will host an exhibition of works by Pablo Picasso and other leading European modern artists in an exhibit titled, “Picasso and Modern Art: Passion and Solitude,” from October 26 to March 1.

This exhibit will showcase 121 pieces of art, including paintings, sculptures and drawings by 39 leading artists of the late 19th and early 20th century. These artworks are part of collections owned by the Albertina Museum in Vienna, Austria.

Visitors can see some of Picasso's most famous works, like “The Frugal Repast” and “Woman in a Green Hat.” The French Fauve school, an early 20th century art movement that emphasized strong colors and wild brush work, is also well represented by works like Amedo Modigliani's “Girl in a White Chemise” and paintings by Henri Matisse. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's works are on hand to demonstrate the qualities of the German Expressionist movement, which focused on interior emotions, moods, and thoughts rather than creating realistic depictions of the exterior world.

This exhibit offers a precious opportunity for art lovers, families, students and museum-goers to feel the passion of these artistic masters.

Tickets cost 4,000 won for children, 9,000 for students and 11,000 for adults. Click here (Korean, English) for directions to the museum.

* Chagall: Magician of Color

Fans of the unique and haunting works of Marc Chagall should be sure not to miss “Chagall: Magician of Color” at the Seoul Museum of Art from December 3 to March 27.

This year's exhibit is a must-see for those who missed the first Chagall exhibitions in Seoul and Busan in 2004, which attracted more than 700,000 people.

Chagall was a Russian-French artist who portrayed romantic scenes through vivid, fantastic colors and shapes. He was loosely associated with a number of early 20th century art movements, and worked in virtually every medium, including oil, illustration, stained glass and ceramic.

This year's exhibit will show 160 of his works from the collections of the Musée du Message Biblique Marc-Chagall in France, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg and pieces from privately held collections.

Unlike the 2004 exhibits, this program includes many rare works painted during his stay in Russia.

The exhibit will also include some of his best-known artworks, including “Promenade,” “Over the Town” and “I and the Village,” which show the dreamy qualities of the painter’s fantasy life. “I and the Village” was the inspiration for Korean poet Kim Chun-su’s work, “The Snow Falling in Chagall's Village.”

Visitors can also see seven paintings by Chagall that have never been exhibited before in Asia, including “Introduction to the Jewish Theatre,” “Over Vitebsk” and “Peasant Life.” Tickets cost from 8,000 to 12,000 won.
