Maria Terrone

Maria Terrone will be reading from both of her poetry collections and her recent chapbook, American Gothic, Take 2.. Among her favorite poems are those inspired by visits to Italy, from Verona to Sicily and in between. Some of her work aims to bring into the light and give voice to “anonymous people in the shadows” who are often immigrants, such as “Unmentionable,” a personal poem about the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire that will be soon be published in More Sweet Lemons: Writing With a Sicilian Accent.
About the Author:

Maria Terrone's second poetry collection, A Secret Room in Fall, won the McGovern Prize from Ashland Poetry Press after being nominated by Gerry LaFemina and was published in 2006. Her first book, The Bodies We Were Loaned, appeared from The Word Works in 2002; her most recent publication is American Gothic, Take 2, a poetry chapbook (Finishing Line Press, 2009). Maria’s work, which has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, has appeared in such magazines as Poetry, The Hudson Review, Notre Dame Review, Poetry International, VIA, and Italian Americana, where she was the featured poet in the winter 2009 issue. More than a dozen national anthologies have published her poetry, including The Milk of Almonds: Italian American Women Writers on Food and Culture and Sweet Lemons: Writing with a Sicilian Accent. A lifelong New Yorker, Maria is assistant vice president for communications at Queens College, CUNY. She lives with her husband, Bill, a physics teacher, in Jackson Heights, Queens.
