A delegation of Italian Parliament Members attended The National Italian American Foundation’s 34th Anniversary Awards Gala in Washington D.C.

A delegation of Italian Parliament Members arrived in Washington D.C. on Friday, October 23th to attend The National Italian American Foundation 34th Anniversary Awards Gala. The members of the delegations that attended the Gala event were Hon. Amato Berardi, U.S. Representative of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Hon. Gianfranco Conte, President of Italian Appropriations Committee, Hon. Catia Polidori, member of the Trade and Industry Committee, Hon. Alessandro Pagano, member of Appropriation Committee, Hon. Marco Pugliese, also member of Appropriation Committee. Other Italian distinguished guests were Hon. Gianni Chiodi, President of the Region of Abruzzo, Hon. Antonio Manganelli, Italy’s National Chief of Police, Hon. Gianni DeGennaro, Director of the Italian Intelligence Agency.

The NIAF represents 25 million Italian Americans, proud of their roots, who with their initiatives are able to raise funds which directly benefit the NIAF’s educational programs. The Foundation’s Gala was a great success and was attended by 3,000 participants and large number of dignitaries and distinguished guests and included two days of activities.

The 2009 honoress included Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Homeland Security, culinary pioneer and restaurant entrepreneur Lidia Bastianich, actress Carla Gugino, renewed Italian singer and songwriter Antonello Venditti and Chief Executive officer of PepsiCo Americas Beverages Massimo d’Amore. Among the distinguished guests were Hon. Bill Pascrell, Jr., Co-chairman of the Italian American Congressional Delegation, Hon. David R. Thorne, U.S. Ambassador of Italy, Hon. Louis French, Former Director of the FBI, General Peter Pace, Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The highlight of the visit for the Italian Delegation was the meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi. During this meeting they exchanged views of strengthening ties between ties the United States and Italy and encourage other initiatives to foster the relationship between the two countries.

The other significant official meeting was with the Co-Chair of the Italian American Congressional Delegation Hon. Bill Pascrell, Jr. They hold talks about establishing an Italian American Parliamentary Association that will present both the Italian American Congressional Delegation and Italian American Parliamentary Delegation and will serve to improve commercial aspects, to facilitate trade between the two countries and dedicate particular attention to reports of commercial nature.

Special meeting was held with the President of the NIAF, Joseph del Raso and the board of the directors of the Foundation about promoting the rich heritage of values and traditions of Italy.

During the NIAF event the Italian Parliament Members received Honorary Citations from the U.S. Congress.

The National Italian Foundation also brought the best of Italy to Washington through Piazza d’Italia. That was a good opportunity to introduce Italian products and services to the faithful gatherings of residents from the greater Washington and Italian American gala attendees from across the U.S. and Italy.
