‘SACRO CODICE’ and the revolution of cinematic language

During the Venice Biennial, at the Hotel Excelsior Lido di Venezia, in the Cinecittà Luce space, on September 8, 2009 at 3.30 pm, we will present the fascinating premiere of a new Italian scientific study:

« Audio-Visual Codes. Designing sound – Solid sounds applied to professional filmmaking »

If it is true that sound frequencies can generate images in our minds, induced by listening to certain sounds, then it should be possible to determine the interrelations between these sounds and the perceived visual forms. One might thus claim that it is truly possible to generate forms and symbols in the mind that sound, transformed into signs, endows with extra-aural meaning. We might suppose, for example, that a film of the future could in some way be ‘seen’ even by the blind, through the application of audio-visual codes. This study was initiated several years ago by Bruno Gioffré (researcher and professor at Unical and Tor Vergata in Rome, DAMS Multimediale, Masters in Sound Engineering, trained in codification systems for sound and sound design), currently involved in the film in progress, ‘Sacro Codice’ (directed by Jordan River) as Sound Designer. This film, still awaiting completion and international release, has seen the involvement of numerous top-notch professionals, including cinematographer Stefano Lombardo, student of multiple Oscar winner Vittorio Storaro, visual and virtual reality effects supervisor Gianfranco Confessore, and the noted Roman composer Angelo Talocci, who is already working on the film’s original soundtrack.

Some of the finished scenes in ‘Sacro Codice’ – which has involved a number of companies, including Advanced Virtual Research and above all Corbec Film (which will be present on September 9 at the film market of the Venice Biennial in Industry Office section) – have already premiered recently at several prestigious events, such as the Tropea Film Festival and the RomaFictionFest, immediately amazing audiences with the innovative freshness of the project, which now includes, in addition to the use of stereoscopy (open to collaboration with new international companies), audio-visual codes with solid sounds which, among the many valuable insights of Sacro Codice, a modern project that is optimally suited to new forms of artistic expression (it is worth noting that two universities are sponsoring theses on the film), will make it truly unique and exclusive. The areas of application of sound-form are quite numerous, and as Professor Bruno Gioffrè observes, «the possible scenarios are highly suggestive, fields like architecture, museology, advertising, filmmaking and the web have “sensed” the esthetic potential of this phenomenon, and are investing in this direction. In filmmaking, the applications run from the simple expansion of sound spatialization, which goes beyond the physical positioning of the speakers, to the expansion of musical expression, with implications for the evolution of the very language of film ».
